Incredible USB C Hub

I am very happy with the Totu 12 in 1 USB C Hub. I am very impressed with almost every aspect of this device. The port placement is perfect for my needs and preferences. It has every port you could really need for the next 6 months to a year, at least considering how fast tech changes. I love the Display port on it as it's the first USB hub I have owned with a DP on it. I go through a lot of USB hubs but this one I am going to try to hang onto. The only thing I don't understand is why they bothered to put USB 2.0 ports on there when they are all backwards compatible, at least as far as I know. I'm guessing it has something to do with interference but I am not sure on that.

I think the size is perfect because of all the features, but it is a little larger the some but still extremely portable. The USB ports on this do not charge devices very well but that is normal and to be expected. I really don't use the HUB for video very often so I really didn't use graphics ports more then to test out the display port to add a fourth monitor to my system. It had no problems working with my Alienware M17xR4 with AGA, The AGA has an ASUS Rog Strix 1080 Ti in it with 2 27" Monitors and a 55" TV attached to it. I was able to add a fourth monitor using the DP on the USB hub, but the 4th monitor also worked through the video card as well. It took a little load off the graphics card but seemed to slow down the system a bit. It's kind of like using the internal monitor on the laptop when docked. I am guessing it was attempting to use the internal GTX 1080 or Intel graphics adapter but didn't confirm my theory on that. The fact that it worked at all actually kind of surprised me. My laptop usually stays docked and attached to the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. When I do take it with me this hub is a true life saver.

Data transfer rates were higher then expected even when using multiple ports at once. This is also the first USB C hub that I have found that allowed a second USB C hub to be installed on a different USB C port. Not sure if it's designed that way or just luck though. Usually both are not detected only one, but for some reason I am able to connect both and that's how it should be considering that was the goal of USB in the first place.

Overall this is one of the best hubs I have owned to date. It adds a lot of functionality for a good price. The Micro-SD and SD card readers are easy to access and use. It's very user friendly and required no real setup even in my advanced environment. That kind of shocked me to be honest. It even works with virtual machines when configured. This is an excellent product that pretty much stays connected to my system now. In my opinion it's definitely worth the price and you won't regret this purchase.

Perfect for my Dell XPS15 but NOT Thinkpad P15
Reviewed in the United States ?? on January 14, 2021
Color: Space Grey
Verified Purchase
The Dell XPS15 comes with a 135W power supply, so I was curious how well this would work being only 75W. I plug the Dell's power supply into the input of this hub, and connect the hub's hard-wired cable into the USBC/Thunderbolt connector on my laptop. It works great!

I use my laptop for work, using it to do software builds. These builds run all 8 cores at nearly 100%, but usually only last a half-hour at most. So, what I see is that at the end of a build, my battery might be down to 95% or 90%, but it quickly charges back up.

The battery indicator in Windows systray shows a warning triangle to let me know the power supply isn't delivering the expected wattage. IIRC, I turned off a warning in the Message Center for it. The triangle doesn't keep me from being able to read the battery meter to see the charging status and power level.

I have a lot of stuff plugged into my laptop, but I can unplug it and carry it away by only unplugging one thing: the hub. This also keeps my desk clear of cables near where my mouse is or where I might have a document to the left. I have two monitors, audio inputs/outputs, DVD, external hard drive, and goodness knows what else connected (too many for this dongle so I daisy-chained a USB3 hub.) Rock solid.

One issue: Sometimes it stops charging after unplugging and plugging back in. Reboot fixes it -- IIRC, sleep or hibernate and wake up fixes it. So, when unplugging/replugging, remember to take a look at the battery/charge indicator. This is NOT a problem with this USB hub. It's a Dell/Microsoft issue. It didn't happen when I tried it just now, and hasn't happened recently, so maybe a software update fixed it.

UPDATE

I now have a Thinkpad P15 20SUS04P00 and I can't get a monitor to work through the TOTU. The Thinkpad detects the added monitors -- as they appear in Windows Display Settings -- but the monitors don't light up. This happens with or without power plugged into the TOTU. The TOTU USB ports all seem to work fine, but I'll have to get a separate display adaptor. So far, a single USBC-HDMI adaptor works with the Thinkpad, and soon I'll try a dual HDMI to USBC adaptor.

I was hoping the TOTU would be more future-proof tha it's so far turned out to be. But who knows, maybe things will be better with the next computer.
