Educational play on complicated subject simplified for a child...

( What's this? )
My daughter has always been curious & she’s raised her children to be curious. Since I know nothing about electric circuits, I thought I should at least know enough to converse with my 11-year-old granddaughter as she learns about it. All I ever figured I needed to know about electricity is where the plug-in are.

This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) kit comes with 29 pieces & parts for doing 20 experiments. Two AA batteries and various metallic & nonmetallic objects are not included but needed in some of the experiments for conductivity testing. Using bright colors, different size & styles of fonts & illustrations, the experiment manual looks interesting & exciting. The first several pages covers information about using the kit for the young person & the adult who will be helping. All of the experiments require batteries so there are some safety suggestions for working with them. This is good general information that children need to know about batteries. Especially in a household where regular & rechargeable batteries are used. A child needs to know the difference so the wrong type of battery won’t be put on a charger.

This kit is aimed for children 8-years-old & up. The experiments are designed to encourage children but they are challenging so a parent/adult may need to guide the child & help build & operate the circuits. Some steps are more difficult & an adult is needed for supervising the battery insertion.

Tips are included & a good explanation about electricity & electric circuits starts the process. As the different projects are completed, at the end is a “What’s Happening” box. These are small paragraphs with hints & diagrams explaining what has been accomplished on the experiment. The way it’s presented is interesting & provides a lot of information related to what has just been accomplished.

The topic can be over a child’s head if too much instruction is presented at one time. Where these are snippets of information for each lesson, it’s not overwhelming & it’s easier to retain the particulars.

I like how this kit simplifies what can be a very complicated subject for a person who isn’t mechanically gifted. My granddaughter will probably enjoy it immensely & I wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t spark her curiosity & she turns around & builds a solar generator.

Arrived damaged, didn’t work

It was only after helping my son put together the first experiment he wanted to try that we realized something was wrong. After spend 30 minutes carefully putting the pieces together, we had to take the entire thing apart, to find that one of the metal contacts coming off of the motor was broken and the entire set was unusable. It’s a shame a set meant for children isn’t more durable.

This Thames & Kosmos Easy Electric Circuits STEM Kit was great. It was so educational and so fun for them to make. Robotics is such a great area and I really liked exposing them to it.

We really like science kits. I would much prefer them doing something than watching something. Science is such an important subject, and I really like that they can learn about it.

It is nice because they can spend the time doing it. They are excited when they make something themselves. They love to make new discoveries.

This is a great activity for a rainy day or a day when your child is sick or when you are just stuck at home. It is a good way to keep a child busy.

I thought it was age appropriate. It wasn’t too hard. The children really liked how it turned out.

I feel like this is good for child development. It kept my children's interest. It would also make a nice gift.

I would recommend it.

fun, simple circuit activity for children who like to tinker

My son is six year-old and loves to build things on his own; he also enjoys taking things apart to see how they work. This was gifted to him as a kindergarten graduation gift. The instruction manual is simple to use, even for someone who is not skilled in electrical engineering. A younger child will need assistance with building the parts but for an older child, this will be an independent project. The parts fit together nicely and all the different things to build work as advertised. My child who does not enjoy building things was completely uninterested; so be sure to only get it for someone truly interested in how things work. Overall, a fun, quality project for young children to complete with assistance.
