B tier game overall

So, let's address the title. Even the Director admitting to it being an "80" or B grade game. Mostly cause they ran out of budget and you can tell. At one point, you do about 10% worth of back to back cutscenes. That said, the story is great as is the gameplay. It has kept me hooked even after release of Ragnarok. Heck I haven't opened it yet so I could 100% this title if I'm being honest.

As for why it's a B grade game. Well, even on PC (pre-mods) it does have dips as well as a 60fps lock (no 120fps modes on PS5/XSX, mods required for PC) and HDR is implemented poorly in regards to in-door scenes (serious black crush). I ended up turning off HDR about 40% of the way through as you spend some time in towns and especially inside buildings near the middle of the game and being able to actually see stuff matters.

As for anyone wonder which version is best.....
Mods not included, they all run fairly equal. PS5 has the Rumble Sense while Xbox Series X runs more consistently due to its OC apu. PC will vary on specs but a PS4 Pro level or better PC will have no issues (no clue on how well M+KB handles)

Either way, overall, def a better game than the last and greatly expands on the Star Ocean lore/verse.

How it SHOULD BE!

I wanted a rpg game kinda like final fantasy but takes me on a adventure. Right from the get go I was invested in the story. Some people say Raymond complains a lot but I don't think so, of your crew and spaceship got blasted outta space you would be mad too lol. I like the graphics on the PS5, very fluid and pretty graphics and it seems like it will be a long time. Can't beat a boss? Grind, lvl up, get new gear etc...it's everything I wanted a RPG to be really. I have to say I was impressed, I like the flow and look of the towns and as far as soundtrack goes final fantasy does have competition. I'm glad this is my first star ocean game, will be keeping a eye out for future titles this to me is easily a 9 out of 10 as far as Japanese rpg goes, I enjoyed this better then ff7 remake and that's saying something!

Enjoyable so far

I have quite a history with Star Ocean, as well as jrpgs in general. In my opinion, the series peaked at Till the End of Time, while Last Hope was its low point. Divine Force is somewhere in the middle, and it feels like a return to form.

The gameplay is really fun, and I love the addition of D.U.M.A. Zipping around during battle is good fun. To me, it plays more like a "Tales" game than a Star Ocean game, with Tales of Berseria being closest to it style-wise. I really enjoy the battle system so far, and the difficulty is adjustable.

The graphics are nothing special, if I'm being honest. I have the game on PS5, but it doesn't look much better than PS3 graphics. In fact, musically and visually, it reminds me most of Eternal Sonata (a very pretty PS3 rpg).

The story is your typical "princess against the Empire" stuff, but it's fine, and easy to follow. I love the combination of fantasy and sci-fi elements. If you're trying to decide which main character to pick, I easily prefer Laeticia over Raymond. Laetitia's design, fighting style and voice acting are all better to me. Raymond looks like a guy from a late 80s/early 90s hair band and there's something weird about that. Overall, the characters are likeable though. The voice acting is... okay. It's fine. It's not great, but it's not cringey.

So, would I recommend the game? Absolutely! It's been a fun addition to my jrpg collection. Also, you don't need to play other Star Ocean games to enjoy this one. It stands alone.

It's a good RPG like I haven't seen in a while

So I'd like to start by saying that I enjoyed the game. The RPG elements were fun. I got to explore this world and grow stronger. And all the side quests and crafting furthered that goal. There's a mini game that is a combination of Go and Yu-Gi-Oh that I loved and I was determined to be the best! I didn't vary the combat a whole lot in terms of movesets and characters, but I had that option.

I didn't like most of the characters. The main guy just dives into tantrums whenever the federation is involved and he comes across as xenophobic. You get a little floating robot to follow you around and talk and we all love that so much since it first appeared in Zelda. Overall I felt no investment in the characters or the story, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying the game anyway.

Star Ocean the Divine Force is not outstanding, nor is it bad, it's just, fine. The combat is fun and fast with customizable combos and party swapping. The dodge mechanic is slow and clunky, but you can use your little robot (DUMA) to protect you or move around quickly. The story has been ok but not really exciting, and the cast is ok as well. Raymonds hair is terrible and the princess talks like a robot for some reason. The world is beautiful, and the music is great, but the open areas are too big for their own good. I found myself exploring every area only to find nothing but maybe a little rabbit. Like I said, this game is ok, and it is better than the last 2 games that's for sure.

Better than the last game!

I like many thought that the last installment, Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness was the worst entry in the Star Ocean series (my personal favorite being Star Ocean 4, yes, including Lymle).

So all this game needed for me to be worth the money was to be better than the last game, and I'm glad to say that it is better!

I would still rate the overall experience around a B/B-. Worth it to a Star Ocean fan like me, but maybe wait for a sale for other more general JRPG fans. The game's plot is still not as grand in scope like Star Ocean 3 nor even Star Ocean 4, but it's far from a negative experience.
