More “neat” & “cool” than educational in our case

My 10-year-old had been playing with a smaller set of these (the “Beginner” set), and with an Amazon gift card, he ordered this kit. It’s definitely more fun than the smaller kit—there are many design ideas in the accompanying booklet that you'll find in not the box. The experiment which he involved him placing two components into a glass of water to sound an alarm, and then pouring increasing amounts of salt into the water to raise the volume of the (admittedly pretty cool) sounds this thing was making as he would hover the components just above the water and then plop then in—he really liked that activity and about three or four others. (Plus, it sparked in my mind the idea that he and I would make a theremin (one of the very first, and extremely cool, electronic music instruments—but NOT with this little kit, of course).

An evening of trying out the designs—and creating a few of his own, using parts with both kits he has—was fun for him, but he complained (& I was thinking the same thing), "You know, this is neat and all, but I really don't learn anything from it—like much about electricity—how it all WORKS."

So, the kits are pretty neat, but after your kid simply follows some instructions to make the circuit designs that interest him or her, this may well end up in a shelf, never to be touched again, as ours has, after only a few hours play.,That's okay, too, I suppose. I was just hoping for something that would engage his mind more, especially as he's fascinated by electricity (and virtually every other "science thing" to which he's ever been exposed).

Great toy for children over 4 years old.
Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2016

We bought this for my 4 year old son about 7 months ago. It comes with a book to make 133 different projects that range from fairly simple to hard. You will need to provide your own AA batteries so don't forget those before you give this as a gift.

Pros:
*A large variety of projects
*The connections are very solid and seem like they would take some abuse from little hands.
*The connections are easy for young children to make.
*The box provides a great carrying case where each item has it's own "place". If you put the items back each time then you will be unlikely to lose anything.
*The toy will "grow" with your child with increasingly challenging projects.

Cons:
*Definitely above the ability level of a 4 year old even though the product information states that this is for 3 years old and up. If you give this to a young child you will need to help them step by step and it might not hold their attention long.
*The box advertises it is for children 8 and up even though the product information doesn't match the description.

This is an amazing toy but I would only recommend it for children older than 4.

Bought this for my daughter for Xmas and she's actually ...
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017

Bought this for my daughter for Xmas and she's actually spending about 1/3 of her time on this (between the trampoline, this, and magnetic building blocks) so that right there should tell you that this toy is just absolutely interesting and engaging. She read the instructions and immediately began building circuits from the guides inside. The book is HUGE, very thick, I didn't imagine it'd have so much material in it.

The only issue we've had so far was from the company itself. They decided to ship the toy in ZERO packaging with a shipping label slapped on it. It absolutely ruined it as a potential 'Santa' gift because dur, Santa doesn't buy things in mommy's name on Amazon. There was no way to salvage the beat-up, misshapen, marred and stickered box for proper Xmas magic and instead it was given as a personal gift. As is normal during the holiday season, mail ran late so packages were arriving after she was out of school all month and this was seconds away from being discovered before we could hide it after delivery.

Great introduction to engineering for a kindergartender

We got it for our almost 6 year old boy for Christmas and he loves it! The items are clearly labeled with numbers and words, so even though he didn't understand the words, he can still follow the instruction booklet by looking at the shapes/colos/numbers. He can spend a long time playing with it. I look forward to get the next level one when he's outgrown this.
