Requires more than "basic soldering skills" - Final Outcome: MAGIC!

I am ranking this product with just three stars because this is not an easy build even though the product description states "requires basic soldering skills". This is one of the more difficult soldering projects considering the small size of the components (see pictures). Many of the components are under 2 mm and require a tweezer to handle. Be extremely careful in the orientation of the integrated circuits and components. Trying to resolder the components is very difficult. The final outcome is very rewarding. The idea of levitating an object, albeit small, in the air looks like pure magic. The project came with all the required components but nothing extra.

Tips:
* Read the manual that is on the product page before making the purchase. Look at the pictures and read the steps to see if you have the skills for the project.
* Practice your soldering skills before you start, if you are rusty. This build requires skill and patience.
* Be extremely careful in your work area (I had to buy a second project kit when components vanished before my eyes). If a component drops on the floor you are likely out of luck.
* Use a tweezer to position the components and hold in place while soldering the first connection.
* You may need a magnifier loupe to read the components, check the position on the board, and to check soldering joints.
* You need to provide your own power source, I first used 4 X AA batteries providing 6 volts which only allowed me to levitate one ball with a shorter device. I then increased the voltage to 12 volts by using 8 X AA battery holder that allowed four balls to levitate with the completed project.

Overall, I am happy with the project because in the end I was able to levitate the balls in the air as shown in the project description. I would not recommend this project for beginners.

Fun to play with!

 This is a fun kit to play with once you get it together.

Due to the small SMD parts used and the Chinese-only assembly instructions, you should have some experience putting together electronic kits and comfortable reading a schematic to figure out where things should go.

Here are some tips: The QR code will bring you to a zip file download which contains the assembly instructions. You'll be prompted for a password and that's what the "fggh" is for. The instructions are for a slightly earlier revision of the product and some things are different. The layout has changed a little, the regulator is a 5V regulator instead of 3.3V and the LEDs that came with my kit were red, not blue. Otherwise everything else is the same - in particular the component designators and values are the same.

There are a few things to experiment with. As my pics show I only used the two long spacers between the plates instead of all three. Also play around with the orientation of the plates - i.e. whether the "T" of both plates are connected to the same spacers or different ones. My 90-degree video was made with the T's connected to different posts.

I haven't yet explored the RX/TX lines on the MCU to see if anything can be done with them. If I find something out I'll post an update.

All in all it was a fun kit to put together and play with and it's a nice demonstration of the interference of pressure waves.

Not a casual endeavor

When I got this, I arrogantly assumed the skill
level would be between intuitive and basic knowledge.

I got this thing to work but only just. When I look at the instructions its all in Chinese with a QR code. In order to download the instructions you need a password. The one printed on my slip did not work but the other reviewer mentioned a code that worked for me.

One tip is that you will notice white circles around the solder-mask screw holes of the main board with all the smds. This is the positive terminal. Otherwise you can determine that with a DMM.

Everyone has their own way of soldering SMDs but if you are having trouble, I tin half the pads on the board. Get a tiny dab of solder on your iron and with some tweezer, position the component and solder in place.

Not the greatest economy of motion but it will work. Also use flux pens and solder whick to clean up.

If you just have a weller with a cone tip and lead free solder. Your’e going to have a bad time.
